Sofas remain amongst the most heavily used of all household furnishings. Their often large size and proximity to the TV or kitchen mean that people are never very far away. As a consequence the amount of wear and tear sofas have to tolerate can be huge. Sofas are frequently very expensive, and to this end need to be specially cared for. Regardless of what all the sofa commercials say, likening the act of buying a sofa to popping down the shops for something small, you should have an arsenal of sofa maintenance tips at the ready – that way your sofas will look good for longer, standing the test of time.
Fabric protection is a great idea. Once applied to your sofa, you are then able to relax more when either yourself of your kids are eating and drinking on it. The small price you pay is well worth the years of protection this type of treatment tends to offer.
Sofas never look that great without their cushions being plumped up every now and then. Down, such as with duck feathers, has a tendency to compact over time, reducing its softness and volume.
If you have removable sheets, always periodically wash them. If need be wash the sofa base and cushions separately, in case of colour leaking or differing manufacturer’s care instructions.
For brushed linen or cotton sofas dry-cleaning is the absolute best way to keep your sofa’s material clean and bright. Delicate cool washes tend to allow lighter colours to remain fast. Cold washes should also be used for darker colours, so as to minimise colour leaking. At all times temperatures should never go above 30 centigrade, with mild detergents being used. Once cleaned, covers should be fitted back onto the sofa just before they are completely dry. Drying should never take place from direct sunlight, or from being placed on radiators or heaters. Covers should never be tumble dried. When ironing your sofa covers adjust your temperature setting to no higher than 150 centigrade.
Velvet fabrics are luxurious, and unfortunately very sensitive to any form of cleaning. Over time the beautiful shiny look of velvet gives way to an equally stunning crushed velvet look due to wear and tear – nothing unusual there. To keep the velvet pile in top condition try not to use any cleaning liquids. Even damp cloths cause damage! Dry cleaning is your only option here. If you want to iron your velvet, ensure you don’t surpass 110 centigrade.
Finally, leather is a quality material, but one that also needs due care and attention. Use specific leather-cleaning products. These generally contain the necessary oils that lock in long-term softness and suppleness. Cleaning and oiling your sofa should be done roughly every 6 months.
